*Spanish and French policies Allowed for slaves to buy back their freedomin the early 1700s (Slavery was still present though)
*Code Noir (“Black Code”) restricted the rights of slaves from Africa.
*Congo Square is where Africans would gather to share cultural practices – located outside the French Quarter in Armstrong Park.
*African community joined with Native American community and started the Mardi Gras traditions
*Backstreet Cultrual museum pays tribute to Mardi Gras Indians
*Treme –oldest African American neighborhood still in existence. –African American Museum
*Fleeing slaves from now Haiti brought voodoo into NOLA
*Dillard University and Xavier University are historical African American colleges in NOLA- Xavier University being the only African American Catholic University in the country
